The success of the initial edition prompted a reissue later in 1993, along with expansions to the game. Arabian Nights was released as the first expansion in December 1993. New expansions and revisions of the base game ("Core Sets") have since been released on a regular basis, amounting to four releases a year. By the end of 1994, the game had printed over a billion cards.[95] Until the release of Mirage in 1996, expansions were released on an irregular basis. Beginning in 2009 one revision of the core set and a set of three related expansions called a "block" were released every year. It’s the most competitive event on Arena you don’t need to qualify for, lasting two days.

Super Qualifiers are usually between seven to nine rounds with a cut to top 8 and then a top 8 playoff. The winner qualifies for the next Regional Championship, but even those who just top 8 are paid out fairly well ($150+ in value with $600 in value going to first). The first thing to understand about competing on Magic Online is that there are multiple unique currencies you have to manage. There are three main currencies plus a few other objects you might be given as you play Magic Online.
Once you get over the initial learning curve for the interface, MTGO is actually quite nice. Especially if you play formats like Modern or Pioneer, which aren’t on Arena. I’m mostly a Limited player, so I’m always looking for ways to sell my cards conveniently. MagicCons have been one of my better experiences doing so, as the dealers will often have mats where my cards are laid out with clear sell prices. I’ve never felt a “shady car dealership” vibe either, as most vendors are quite friendly and transparent with their prices. I have fond memories of the paper Pro Tours I played years ago (Hour of Devastation, Ixalan, Dominaria, and Throne of Eldraine) and am personally thrilled that the PT is back.

Keeping tabs on the various stores in your area is a good way of knowing what competitive events are coming up. In addition to the quarterly set releases, Magic cards are released in other products as well, such as the Planechase and Archenemy spin-off games. These combine reprinted Magic cards with new, oversized cards with new functionality. Magic cards are also printed specifically for collectors, such as the From the Vault and Premium Deck Series sets, which contain exclusively premium foil cards.
How to Play MTG Arena
A single deck requires 30 cards and must be aligned to one of six distinct gods – Light, Death, War, Nature, Magic and Deception. You can add up to 2 copies of the same card to your deck and only one copy if it's a legendary card. If you want to spend all the money (or get together for a draft), thematic decks often come in beefy 10-pack sets.
The Event Details screen tracks how many matches remain, and which players are involved (highlighted in yellow). While a round is in progress, the standings entering the current round are shown. Standings aren’t updated until all matches in a round are finished. However, the Friendly Sealed League contains three stages of competition – after each stage, you can optionally add a booster to your Sealed pool to allow new options in deckbuilding. Preparing for MTG tournaments can be a daunting task, especially if you’re attending your first.
I always bring extra cards in case I want to make any last-minute sideboard changes. Sleeves can break easily so it’s important to have extras on hand. Bring a printed out decklist to the event so you don’t make any mistakes writing it out. This is a small note but if you write your decklist out at the event your opponents might be able to see what you’re playing.
If you are not satisfied with the starter deck, you can customize it by switching cards and clicking “SELECT” to save. Each new user is eligible for a welcome set containing 70 different cards, with two copies of each card. Gods Unchained works like other online strategy games, with its own version of currency like “gold” or “credits”. However, these coins take players' fiat money and convert it into a more pleasant gaming environment. Some booster packs provide mixed mana, so bear in mind that not every card will match your chosen scheme.
If you win this match, you will make top 8 while your opponent will not make top 8 whether they win or lose. You are free to ask your opponent for a concession in this situation, as long as they have no benefit. If you were to offer them something tangible, such as money or booster packs, you would immediately be disqualified for bribery. These situations can be tricky, if you ever find yourself in one always consult with a judge to navigate it appropriately. Finally the last great resource for finding local tournaments is social media. Many stores keep up to date on Facebook, Discord, and their personal websites for posting upcoming larger events.
The first two days consist of three rounds of booster draft of the most recent expansion followed by five rounds of constructed. At the end of sixteen rounds of Swiss, the tournament cuts to elimination rounds featuring the eight players with the best record. Competitive MTG tournaments usually include high prize payouts to the top 8 players, usually in cash or store credit. Local competitive events at your local store are usually one day events with larger events such as Grand Prixs and Star City Games events being multiple days. Proxy cards (or proxies) are cards typically created by players as stand ins for rare cards they either already own and don't want to ruin or cards they don't yet own.
You’ll need commander combos to buy a badge for each day you're there, plus pay for any events, cards, food, travel expenses, etc. Depending on how you budget and how far you have to travel, you could be looking at $500-$1000~ in expenses. I often traveled with fellow grinders who I was already friendly with, as sharing a hotel or AirBnB is a great way to cut down on costs. The road to World’s is surely a long one, but there’s no greater accomplishment in Magic than winning World’s. The prize pool for World’s scales to match this with an estimated total prize pool of $1 million spread between about 128 competitors. Overall, these decks give you a bit more versatility and mechanical crunch, but are still very simple to pick up.
This one featured a $75k Standard Open, Pro Tour Murders at Karlov Manor, and a bunch of neat events themed around this new Murder mystery set. The next Regional Championship in America is at Dreamhack Atlanta from November 18th to 20th with a prize pool of $150k! Direct filtering for RCQs on MTG Melee returns quite a few events!
